Emma Thompson writes in The Times about how The Church of England must rebalance their spending to pay priests a better wage.
The church just will not face up to the fact that no one in CofE finance understands finance! It is the parish clergy who bring in the money through keeping in contact with the people. Those at the top don’t bring in one penny but spend a huge amount. It is not ‘their’ money but belongs to the congregations. Archdeacons should be returned to parish work caring for three or four parishes and being archdeacon as well with a small top up to the stipend. Until twenty years ago that is where they always were. Why do archdeacons need to live in large expensive properties when there are numerous empty vicarages?
